Yellow Fin Tuna on Navy Cotton webbing. Leather Man Ltd. has been making belts in a small factory in New England for over half a century. We have learned that there are certain rules to follow in making a quality belt. Use only the best components: In our case the brass is from the same foundry that supplies the buckles to Vuitton, Coach and Dooney. It is all cast, hand polished to a low luster and lacquered. It is fully in compliance with California Proposition 65. The leather is vegetable tanned, top grain, shoulder leather with an aniline dye. It is produced by North America’s largest tannery. All ribbons are designed by us and sometimes have taken five or six iterations to get exactly the effect we want. The final component, workmanship is the most important. We recently added up how many man years of experience we have in our factory. The answer is 278 with an average tenure of 13 years per employee. The last bit must seem a little strange, but Leather Man has no quality control department. Because every employee is charged with the responsibility of only passing along perfect craftsmanship. Not just once in a while, but every time, year after year. Takes a while to get that mind set, but once it is in place things move along nicely. And truth be told, people are much happier making high quality products. All of our work is the product of a team. Sewers, cutters, painters, cobblers, salespeople and even owners.
